What will I study?

This programme offers an academic journey in a city known for its growing biomedical research sector.

Designed for pre-medical and pre-health students, this five-week programme combines classroom learning with hands-on lab and clinical simulation experiences. It offers practical exposure to the Spanish language within international healthcare settings.

You’ll explore key concepts in modern biomedical science through an immersive, real-world approach.

Studying at UAL, you’ll learn directly from experienced faculty and hear from guest speakers, including biomedical researchers and healthcare professionals. The programme brings together two core courses supported by structured lab work and clinical simulations.

Programme Overview

Course 1: General/Molecular Biochemistry (Biochemistry I) – 4 US academic credits – 60 Contact hours

Develop a solid foundation in biochemistry by exploring biomolecules, enzyme activity, and metabolic pathways – all with a focus on human health and medicine. You’ll see how molecular processes link to disease, nutrition, and treatment, while benefitting from practical lab experience. From spectrophotometry and enzyme assays to DNA extraction and protein analysis, you’ll get hands-on with techniques used in modern research.

Course 2: Spanish for Healthcare – 3 US academic credits – 45 Contact hours

This course is designed to develop practical language skills for use in real-world clinical settings. You’ll practise essentials like patient intake, history-taking, explaining lab results, and discussing treatment plans, while you learn how to communicate with cultural sensitivity and professionalism.

Designed at two proficiency levels, the syllabus ensures that all students can engage effectively in clinical situations.

Level 1 (Beginner/Intermediate) is aimed at those with little or some Spanish language experience. You will build confidence in patient communication and basic clinical conversations.
Level 2 (Advanced) targets students with strong Spanish skills. You’ll focus on complex interactions such as obtaining informed consent, discussing lab and biochemistry results, and navigating ethical issues in healthcare.

Experiential Learning – Laboratory Techniques and Biomedical Lab Exposure (20-25 hours)

Gain hands-on experience in the biochemistry lab through techniques such as protein assays, enzyme kinetics, DNA extraction, and gel electrophoresis. Alongside this, you’ll be introduced to modern biomedical workflows, including robotic sample handling, automated diagnostics, and quality control procedures.

Experiential Learning – Simulation Labs (15-20 hours)

Take part in simulations that mirror real clinical scenarios, including metabolic disorders, hypoglycaemia, sepsis, and patient communication challenges. Integrate your biochemistry knowledge and develop your Spanish language skills through role-play and OSCE-style assessments.

Cultural Immersion – Your summer abroad is more than textbooks and labs. This programme includes plenty of scope for cultural immersion, including:

A guided tour of Alcazaba Fortress & Almería’s old city.
An excursion to Cabo de Gata–Níjar Natural Park.
Flamenco nights, tapas routes, and local market visits.
Take an optional weekend trip to Granada & the Alhambra.
Build industry links by networking with Spanish healthcare professionals & researchers.

Where Will I Stay?

As a summer abroad student, you’ll be housed in shared rooms, in apartment-style units or in student residences with separate single beds and a private bathroom.

Accommodations will be located in, or within proximity to, Almeria’s historic city centre (subject to availability) with an accessible commute to the university by foot or public transport. All apartments have a kitchen or kitchenette (equipped with basic utensils), a bathroom and access to laundry facilities.*
